The Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, on Saturday, assured Nigerian students languishing at their homes that tertiary institutions across the country will reopen very soon.

Though he did not give a specific date for the re-opening, he said he would articulate the situation report from the National Universities Commission, NUC, and other regulatory bodies of various tertiary institutions and present to the Presidential Task Force, PTF on COVID-19 for evaluation.

Nwajiuba disclosed this during an NTA programme on ‘Nigeria Policy Brief on Education and COVID-19’, adding that he has received calls from private universities and public universities for reopening of tertiary institutions in the country.

Tertiary institutions across the country will open very soon. Private universities have written us, requesting that they are allowed to reopen ahead of public institutions. Vice-Chancellors have also requested that we allow them to reopen for their students in exit clauses.

“We have also a lot of calls from bodies who want us to resolve the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, before reopening because some public schools which are not ASUU-prone want to take the advantage of the strike to move ahead, but that would destroy our public schools. So, we are working on all these calls.

“NUC would need to do its appraisals and bring it to me. We are waiting for the same from other tertiary institutions bodies so I can situate them and present the PTF on COVID-19. I can’t give the NUC a deadline on this because our job at the ministry is to wait for their inputs. This is not a political decision alone.

“If you open the university system, you have opened the country. ASUU should call-off the strike because the issues they came on board with have been resolved, more or less. The body is making efforts to situate the visitation panel, though, that has to be gazetted and we are on it.

“The other request under the MoU which has not been done is the needs assessment but some of the projects have not been completed because many of the contractors didn’t finish the work they were asked to do. I Know ASUU is not recalcitrant because it is under pressure from the members too,” he said.

National Association of University Students (NAUS)

Press Release
                                                         19-08-2020

RESUMPTION DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED NEXT WEEK - MINISTER OF EDUCATION, ADAMU ADAMU

Before delving into the Crux of this press text; which is basically to update the general public, most especially the students' populace the takeaway of today's protest which commenced from Unity Fountain in Abuja to the Federal Ministry of Education in demanding for serious and decisive action to be taken on safe re-opening of schools nationwide by the Federal Government.

Foremost, I commend the resilience and commitment of all Students' Union Presidents and the entire Nigerian students for mobilising massively towards the historic walk that was embarked upon today by the association despite the threat of fire and brimstone by the Department of State Security.

It is on record that the Department of State Security had earlier threatened to gun down Nigerian students should any protest held today towards showing dissatisfaction towards continuous closure of schools with no end in sight. History, they say is an albatross; you cannot force it to move, but, when it moves, it moves with purpose.

"Anybody who closes a school for any reason whatsoever is an enemy of the state"- Tai Solarin

This statement is not only true but profound. As an association, we believe that we would not have been here agitating for reopening of schools if not for years of governmental failure to massively invest in the educational sector. Clearly, the failure of the government to invest in education contributes significantly as to why Nigerian students are home while their schools remain closed with no hope as to when schools would be reopened. The fact that our schools have been closed for close to 5 months with the government not taking any step towards ensuring that academic activities commences is a pointer to the fact that Nigeria as a country is in serious crisis.

Indeed, there is wisdom in the saying of Martin Luther King Jnr. that "freedom is never given voluntarily by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed."

Today, the national leadership of the association was summoned into a meeting during the heat of the protest that held from Unity Fountain to the Federal Ministry of Education. The meeting had in attendance several Directors including a representative of the Minister of Education where we pushed some pro-students demands which include but not limited to;
Safe reopening of schools.
Provision of palliative for Nigerian students ahead of resumption.
Provision of facemasks and all other safety kits needed to curb the spread of covid-19.
Rehabilitation of health centres across tertiary institutions in the country.
An interface between the Federal Ministry of Education and NURTW towards ensuring that there is no unreasonable astronomical increase in transport fares as students prepare to travel back to their institutions.
Proper funding of the educational sector.

However, the representative of the Minister of Education promised to relay our demands to the Minister and he also spoke on behalf of the Minister that a meeting would be convened next week to discuss reopening of schools and that a press text shall be issued to that effect to announce date for school reopening as soon as the meeting is concluded. Conclusively, the students' community were told to disregard the news flying round social media that schools resumes on the 7th of September, 2020.

Indeed, freedom cometh by struggle. We wish all Union Presidents and students a safe journey to their destinations.

In the application type select Undergraduate, then let it load before selecting your course.

It is important to check through the admission requirements so as not to miss this year’s admission. Students over the years have lost their admission probably because they didn't meet the required age, wrong subject combination for Jamb and O'LEVEL. It is important you go through this. When you discover you do not meet the requirements, ensure you change to a course that meets the requirement or you change institution.

The Federal Government has said that it will continue to engage striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ahead of reopening of universities and other tertiary institutions

ASUU has been on strike since March, 2020 over lingering issues including an attempt to force the lecturers to enrol on the Federal Government Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) platform.

Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwjiuba while responding to a question on Thursday at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing, expressed optimism that there would be compromise before the resumption of universities. ASUU strike is not threat to Reopening of Varsities Say FG

He said the PTF would give directive on when the universities would be reopened, saying he was also in consultation with proprietors of private universities in the country who have continued to mount pressure on the government to reopen the education space.

Nwajiuba said the private universities owners have argued that since worship places and markets have reopened, private universities should be reopened if the public institutions were not ready. Schools Resumption not Delay By Asuu Strike Says FG

He said the over 62,000 lecturers with more than 10,000 professors, are patriotic Nigerians who have also been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that they would see reasons to return to classrooms when the institutions are eventually reopened.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor,
Administration, Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) who is also the Chairman of COVID-19 Committee of the Institution, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina said the University has set up a 13-man COVID-19 Committee from various departments of the Institution on the measures to put in place for reopening of the school.

According to him, the World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols are being domesticated and adopted in FUOYE as the University has bought thermometers, sanitisers and disinfectants.

“We hope to disinfect the University environment again apart from the fumigation we did in April. Public awareness and health education on the virus is ongoing. We will soon buy disinfectant tunnels and deploy them to critical areas where people are passing”.

As part of the strategies for reopening, Fasina highlighted grouping faculties where some would be pure online such as Arts, Social Sciences, Education to allow spaces for Sciences, Engineering and Agriculture faculties in order to keep to social distancing rule.

He stressed that courses with large numbers of students like General studies would be absolute online, while practical courses in Agriculture, Science and Engineering would be taking in group through morning and afternoon shifting by alternating the days, adding that consideration might likely be given to final year students first, while resumption of other students would be in phases.

The DVC further explained that the University would deploy ICT to compliment teaching and that staff would be trained especially the academic staff, on how to go about online teaching without anyone losing his or her job by adopting the new normal.

“Data will be purchased in bulk at a discounted rate and shared to students who will need more data to learn online. The University will also encourage students to acquire necessary ICT tools to facilitate e-learning”.

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has shifted the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (post-UTME) screening for the 2020 admission processes to 7 September, 2020 in Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the country.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, revealed this on Monday after a consultative virtual meeting with vice chancellors, rectors, and provosts of tertiary education institutions.

The board stated that the shift in the date of the admission process from the earlier announced 22 August, is to accommodate candidates who will be taking part in this year’s school-based Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

According to him, “Presently as you are aware, WAEC starts the Senior School Certificate Examination on 17 August, it will go on till 7th of September. Similarly, on the 21 of September or thereabout, NABTEB will commence its own examination that will go on till on the 15 of October, and immediately after that, NECO starts on the 5th and will hold till 18 of November.

Rather than making candidates run, particularly, when they will have to write their school certificate exam in different towns and rush to university elsewhere for post-UTME, like somebody rushing from Sokoto to Ibadan t for post-UTME, we believe as a custodian of the highest sector of the education system, we should avoid that,” Oloyede said.

Oloyede further said institutions whose post-UTME screening is mandatory for candidates would have to spread such exercise in two phases.

“For those (institutions) who want to take post-UTME, that cannot be earlier than the 7th of September and it will be held twice- 7 September to 4 October, and then it will be held for the second time on the 18 November to mop up those who are taking their school certificate examination.”

He also commended the various submissions of heads of tertiary institutions during the meeting, saying that institutions that conduct admissions without the administration of any-post UTME screening should also ensure candidates whose SSCE results will be released towards the end of the year are not denied participation in the admission exercise.

The JAMB’s registrar similarly, revealed that the Board has withheld results of candidates that sat for this year’s UTME at Correctional Service centres (prisons) over suspected infractions.

“There are candidates who took exams in the prison yard that we know are not prisoners, so we wrote to the correctional centres to explain how that happens, because we didn’t want non-prisoners to take advantage of the concessions we give to inmates,” Oloyede said.
